1936 | Construction of the Florian-Geyer-Halle. Kitzingen becomes a garrison town. |
1938 | The new Main Bridge (Konrad Adenauer Bridge since 1968) and the bypass (B 8) are opened to traffic. Kitzingen now has 14,460 inhabitants. On 10 November 1938, the synagogue of the Jewish community on Landwehrstraße was set on fire. By the end of 1938, Kitzingen had only 190 Jewish residents, whereas in 1933 the figure had been 360. |
1942 | On 21 March, 76 Jews from Kitzingen are deported to Würzburg, from where they are deported to the concentration camp in Izbica near Lublin; a further 19 Jews are sent to the Theresienstadt ghetto on 21 September. After the war, none of the former members of the community returned to Kitzingen. |
1945 | On 23 February, the town was severely hit by an American air raid that claimed 600 lives; 800 residential buildings were bombed, and a total of 35% of the buildings were badly damaged. During the Second World War, 400 soldiers from Kitzingen lost their lives. |
1957-1958 | Construction of a harbour area at the barrage. |
1962 | The Armin Knab state grammar school and the municipal grammar school for girls start classes in the new school centre in Mühlberg. |
1964 | Connection of Kitzingen to the motorway with two junctions. |
1972 | Kitzingen becomes a large district town. Completion of the new secondary school building in Mühlberg. |
1973-1978 | Hoheim is incorporated on 1 October 1973, Sickershausen on 1 January 1975, Repperndorf on 1 January 1978 and Hohenfeld on 1 May 1978. |
1977 | The indoor saltwater pool is opened. |
1982 | Conversion of the Luitpoldbad (public baths) into the Luitpoldbau, which houses the adult education centre and municipal library, both founded in 1947. |
1983 | The expansion of the pedestrian zone on the market square and on the upper Marktstrasse is tackled. Inauguration of the new district hospital on Muldenweg. As a result, the hospitals in Iphofen and Marktbreit will cease operations this year. With its 260 beds, the new district hospital is the centre of medical care in the district of Kitzingen. |
1984 | The town of Kitzingen is establishing twinning arrangements with the Italian town of Montevarchi and the town of Prades in southern France. Opening of the district hospital in the Muldenweg area. |
1984/85 | On New Year's Eve, the attic of the historic town hall (built between 1561 and 1563) caught fire after a firework set it alight. Thanks to the efforts of the fire services, the fire was extinguished and the damage was kept to a minimum. |
1986 | Start of construction for the bypasses (tangents) due to the increasing traffic through the city centre. |
