20th century

At the beginning of the 20th century, Kitzingen developed into a modern town thanks to new educational, health and leisure facilities as well as the construction of an airfield and military installations. The National Socialist era brought severe changes, including the destruction of the synagogue, deportations of the Jewish population and massive war damage caused by the air raid of 1945. After the Second World War, reconstruction began, accompanied by major infrastructure projects such as a port facility, motorway links and new school centres.

In the 1970s, Kitzingen grew through incorporation and became a large district town. Cultural and social facilities such as a swimming pool, adult education centre, town library and pedestrian zone shaped the town's development from the 1980s onwards. With the new district hospital, Kitzingen became the medical centre of the district. The expansion of the transport network with tangents and bridges provided lasting relief for the town centre. Anniversaries, town twinning and the opening of the Old Synagogue also emphasised the town's historical awareness and international orientation.

1942

On 21 March, 76 Jews from Kitzingen are deported to Würzburg, from where they are deported to the concentration camp in Izbica near Lublin; a further 19 Jews are sent to the Theresienstadt ghetto on 21 September. After the war, none of the former members of the community returned to Kitzingen.

1945

On 23 February, the town was severely hit by an American air raid that claimed 600 lives; 800 residential buildings were bombed, and a total of 35% of the buildings were badly damaged. During the Second World War, 400 soldiers from Kitzingen lost their lives.
