The children have something to look forward to – and so do their parents and carers: just in time for summer, the children’s playground on the banks of the Main in Kitzingen, behind the Old Synagogue, has gained a new attraction. A ‘four-bar swing’, a larger swing in the shape of a boat and several balancing structures were already being enthusiastically taken over by the nursery children even before the official opening on 11 June.
The playground, featuring the distinctive ‘Kitanic’ structure visible from afar, opened around 15 years ago. For a long time, it was the only playground in the old town area – until the public playground in the school playground was added last year. Staff from the council’s works department installed the play equipment back in April, and now the grass around it has grown so well that it can withstand the footfall of lots of children. The project – including the planting of five new, shade-providing trees – cost around 19,000 euros.
At the opening ceremony, Lord Mayor Dr Enis Tiz thanked the staff of the municipal works department and the city’s parks and gardens department. “We, as the local authority, create the framework for wonderful experiences, and the children bring these places to life,” he said. As deputy district administrator and as a grandmother, Dr Gisela Kramer-Grünwald thanked the town for creating a space where children can explore and adults can socialise in a relaxed atmosphere. Over the next 15 to 20 years, the children should derive a great deal of enjoyment from this new meeting place right on the riverbank.
