Description of the
The parties to the marriage must register their marriage with the registry office and provide the necessary documents. As a general rule, they must appear in person at the registry office. If one of them is unable to attend, the other may authorise them in writing. In exceptional cases, where both parties are unable to attend for a valid reason, the marriage may be registered in writing or through a representative.
Which registry office is responsible for registering the marriage depends on the place of residence of the parties. If they have different places of residence, they may choose at which of the competent registry offices they wish to register their marriage.
Registration of the marriage is required so that the registry office can determine whether the legal requirements for marriage have been met and whether there are any legal impediments to the marriage (checking eligibility to marry).
The competent registry office is only binding for the purpose of registering the marriage. The marriage may be solemnised at any registry office in Germany, provided that no impediment to marriage was identified during the check of the marriage requirements carried out by the registry office where the marriage was registered, and provided that there have been no changes in the actual circumstances (regarding the marriage requirements) of the parties since the registration. The parties to the marriage will receive a notification from the registry office where the marriage was registered confirming that there are no impediments to marriage. The marriage must take place within six months of this notification; otherwise, a new registration procedure will be required.Prerequisites
Only once the following questions have been clarified can the registry office determine whether the couple are eligible to marry and arrange a specific date for the wedding.
Are you already 18 years old?
Both parties to the marriage must be of legal age.
Have you ever been married or in a civil partnership?- The previous marriage must have been dissolved by death, divorce or other judicial annulment. If a
previous marriage was dissolved by divorce abroad, the following applies: A foreign divorce is generally only valid in Germany if it has been expressly recognised by the competent state judicial authority. Exceptions apply only if the marriage was dissolved in the home country of both spouses and neither spouse is subject to German law. Recognition of the foreign decision is also not required if a court or authority of an EU Member State, with the exception of Denmark, has issued the decision and the decision was made after 1 March 2001. Where recognition is required, it is advisable to submit the necessary application in good time, as processing takes a certain amount of time and further documents may need to be obtained in some circumstances. The registry office where the new marriage is to be solemnised will be happy to assist with the application. If the recognition of a foreign divorce decree has been granted by a state judicial administration, it is binding on courts and administrative authorities throughout the Federal Republic of Germany, thereby establishing, once and for all, a clear status regarding the applicant’s civil status. - The previous civil partnership must have been dissolved by death, a court order of dissolution or other judicial dissolution.
Are you directly related to one another? Or are you full or half-siblings?
In these cases, marriage is not permitted. This also applies if the family relationship has been terminated through adoption.
Are you adopted siblings?
In this case, the family court may grant an exception.
Are you foreign nationals
? Unless you are entering into a same-sex marriage, foreign nationals must submit a certificate of no impediment to marriage from the authorities in their country of origin. Deadlines
The marriage registration is valid for six months from the date of notification by the registry office. As couples usually have a specific wedding date in mind, it is therefore advisable to check with the registry office that is to conduct the marriage ceremony whether the desired date is available and by when, at the latest, the registration must be submitted to the relevant registry office. It is important to bear in mind that obtaining the necessary documents may take some time.

In order to marry, proof must be provided of, amongst other things, civil status, place of residence or habitual residence, and nationality. In the event of a previous marriage or civil partnership, proof must be provided of both the marriage or partnership and its dissolution.

Please send us the questionnaire at the earliest 6 months before the planned date of the marriage.
- Authorisation to register the marriage
The couple must register the marriage at the registry office and obtain the necessary papers. In principle, you must attend the registry office in person. The fee for checking the capacity to marry is EUR 55.00.
If foreign law is to be observed, the fee is increased by EUR 30.00 per person.
Other fees and expenses may also be incurred.

Procedure
The couple must register the marriage at the registry office. They must appear in person at the registry office. Weddings at the Kitzingen Registry Office generally take place on Thursday and Friday mornings. Saturday weddings are held on a pre-arranged Saturday each month (see below for dates). Please enquire about a date in good time. An additional fee of €150.00 applies for a wedding on a Saturday (outside opening hours).

Weddings on the city balcony
Wedding ceremonies take place once a month on a fixed Friday between May and September, and additionally on a fixed Saturday between June and August (10.00 am | 11.00 am | 12.00 pm) and are conducted by the registrars at Kitzingen Registry Office.
Further dates may be arranged upon personal request and in consultation with the Lord Mayor, Dr Enis Tiz. If bad weather is forecast for the day before the wedding, the ceremonies will take place in the Town Hall/wedding hall. It is therefore not possible to reschedule the date.
The area by the city balcony is also visible and audible to third parties.
An additional fee of €200.00 applies for a wedding ceremony on the Stadtbalkon.
Unfortunately, for organisational reasons, no wedding ceremonies can be held on the Stadtbalkon in August and September 2026.
