Description of the
Regular road traffic counting
Nationwide road traffic counts (SVZ) are carried out regularly - usually every five years - to monitor traffic trends and determine traffic volumes on the qualified road network. In addition to the federal trunk roads (motorways and trunk roads) in Bavaria, the counts also cover the state roads and the majority of district roads.
The counts are carried out by the following authorities:
- Autobahn GmbH of the Federal Government
- State building authorities on federal and state roads as well as on district roads in certain districts (with the exception of through roads in large cities)
- District offices for district roads
The Bavarian State Ministry of Housing, Building and Transport is responsible for coordinating the traffic count within Bavaria. The results are available online (see ‘Further links’). In addition
, some major cities carry out their own regular traffic counts.Automatic road traffic counting
Automatic permanent counting stations are used in Bavaria to continuously count road traffic.
The majority are located on federal motorways and main roads, with a small proportion on state and district roads. These measuring devices record the traffic situation around the clock all year round. The long-term data from the automatic continuous counting stations form the basis for the extrapolation factors of the regular road traffic count.
The permanent counting stations on the motorways are operated by Autobahn GmbH des Bundes and on the federal, state and district roads by the state building authorities. The results of the automatic road traffic count are available on the Internet (see "Related links").
Special road traffic counts
For various reasons (e.g. road planning, traffic studies), the road authorities or the cities and municipalities carry out (additional) special road traffic counts. The following authorities are responsible for road construction on the individual roads:
- Autobahn GmbH of the Federal Government
- State building authorities on federal and state roads as well as on district roads in certain districts (with the exception of through roads in large cities)
- District offices for district roads
- Cities and municipalities for municipal roads and large cities for local crossings of federal, state and district roads
