Alte Synagoge Cultural Centre – Culture steeped in history

Situated in the heart of Kitzingen, the Old Synagogue combines historical significance with a varied cultural programme. Since its reopening in 1993, the building has become a popular meeting place for culture lovers.

Whether it’s music, cabaret, theatre, readings, lectures or special film and multimedia events – the programme offers numerous opportunities to discover culture in its many and varied forms. In addition, the Adult Education Centre, the Music School, the Friends’ Association and other municipal institutions also use the premises for their events.

This creates a vibrant meeting place where history meets the present and culture can be experienced together.

Roxy Cinema

The Roxy Cinema in Kitzingen combines the charm of days gone by with a modern cinema experience. The nostalgic atmosphere makes a visit there something special – yet the films shown on the big screen are still very much in keeping with the times and exactly what cinema-goers want to see.

As well as the latest cinema releases, the programme regularly features special film series and events. So there’s always something new to discover at the Roxy – from major blockbusters to special film nights.

A treat for film fans: every Tuesday, a film is shown in its original language. It’s a great opportunity to experience films in a truly authentic way.

Whether for a traditional trip to the cinema, a special film night or an event: the Roxy Cinema is a piece of Kitzingen’s cinematic history and remains a popular meeting place for film enthusiasts to this day.

Paper theatre

Grand theatre on a tiny stage: at Gabriele Brunsch’s Papiertheater Kitzingen, fairy tales, stories and original productions are brought to life in a very special way. The miniature art stage is barely bigger than a television – and yet it gives rise to richly detailed theatrical worlds complete with characters, sets, music, voices and lighting effects.

The figures, stage sets and backdrops are lovingly handcrafted, whilst elaborately produced soundtracks and lighting effects bring the little scenes to life.

The approximately 200-year-old tradition of paper theatre was included in the National Register of Intangible Cultural Heritage in 2021. In Kitzingen, this historic form of theatre is also being given a completely new interpretation – with original plays and modern adaptations, as well as well-known fairy tales.

The Kitzingen Paper Theatre is therefore a very special cultural venue: small in size, but big on imagination and attention to detail.

Community Centre

The Kitzingen Community Centre is a place for people to meet, exchange ideas and share experiences. Alongside a range of activities for all generations and cultures, art and culture also play an important role.

Concerts and live music events are held here regularly – ranging from a variety of musical genres to special events where the focus is on shared experiences.

Anyone who enjoys making music themselves or is simply looking to chat with other music enthusiasts is welcome to join the music get-together. It takes place on the last Wednesday of every month and offers the chance to make music, listen and get to know one another.

Carnival Academy

The German Carnival Academy is a unique cultural venue in Kitzingen. It is a place where living traditions, culture and modern events come together. As a centre for training, consultancy and research, the Academy supports clubs and participants in keeping the carnival tradition alive and developing it further.

But the FastnachtAkademie has something to offer not just during the carnival season. The cultural centre offers a varied programme of events, including cabaret, concerts, literary evenings, improv theatre and other cultural events. In collaboration with the German Carnival Museum, this creates a diverse programme that extends far beyond the carnival season.

World Press Photo Exhibition

Once a year, the wider world comes to Kitzingen: the World Press Photo exhibition showcases award-winning press photographs and documentary images from all over the world. The photographs tell stories of current events, social developments and the people behind them – they are striking, moving and, at times, hard to bear.

Kitzingen has hosted the prestigious exhibition since 2007 and is regarded as the smallest World Press Photo venue in the world. As a result, the Town Hall becomes a special venue for international photography every year, bringing global stories to life right in the heart of Kitzingen town centre.

The exhibition invites visitors to take a closer look, discover new perspectives and explore the stories behind the images. There is also an audio guide providing background information on selected photographs.
